Matthew 5:1-2
Sermon Topics
Introduction:
Do not fall into the mistake of supposing that the opening verses of the Sermon on the Mount set forth “How to Be Saved.”
“What are the marks and evidence of a work of grace in the soul?” (John 8:30-31; 2 Corinthians 13:5)
- The Occasion of the Sermon (Matthew 5:1)
- He who will not reap when the fields are ripe for harvest will only have himself to blame if in other seasons he is unable to fill his arms with sheaves.
- The Place of the Sermon (Matthew 5:1)
- It was from a mountain that God proclaimed the Law; it is on a mountain that Jesus expands it.
- The Posture of Our Lord (Matthew 5:1)
- The Style of His Delivery (Matthew 5:2)
- “Lord, as You have opened your mouth; open our hearts.”
—
- The Acceptance of the Sermon (Malachi 4:6; Matthew 5:3; Mark 1:15; John 3:17; Acts 1:9)
- The Acceptance of Examination
- The Beatitudes rise, but it would be quite as correct to say that they descend, for from the human point of view they do so.
- The Seven Beatitudes mark deepening humiliation and growing exaltation.
- Blessed is the first moment of the Christian life on earth, and Blessed is the last. (John 12:33-34; John 12:35-36; John 8:12, 21, 24; Genesis 6:3)
