Introduction: (Psalm 55:6-8)
The deeper the sorrow, disappointment, and pain, the more elusive that place of comfort. (Matthew 24:4-7, 8)
- A Proper Kind of Sorrow (Psalm 42:2-3; 2 Timothy 1:3-4; Jeremiah 9:1)
- An Improper Kind of Sorrow (1 Kings 21:4; 2 Samuel 18:5, 33)
- A Godly Sorrow that Brings Life (2 Corinthians 7:10)
- Only one kind of sorrow brings life, and that is godly sorrow, which leads you to repentance.
- Godly sorrow is linked to Repentance, and Repentance is linked to sin. (Matthew 5:3,4; Genesis 37:34; Mark 16:10)
- God’s Response to Mourning: Comfort
- The happiness does not come from the mourning; it comes in God’s response to it.
- If someone else’s sins hurt you more than your own, you need to re-evaluate your own heart. (James 4:8-10)
- Start crying and Stop laughing.
- Conviction of sin must PRECEDE and follow CONVERSION. (2 Corinthians 12:21)
- Hindrances to a Mournful Spirit
- A stony heart does not mourn! It is void of Grace! The Plow of God will not break it up.

- Despair (Jeremiah 18:12)
- Conceit
- Presumption (Isaiah 55:7)
- Procrastination (John 4:14)
- Frivolity (Amos 6:5-7; Matthew 5:4)
