Matthew 5:1-2

Sermon Topics

Introduction:

Do not fall into the mistake of supposing that the opening verses of the Sermon on the Mount set forth “How to Be Saved.”
“What are the marks and evidence of a work of grace in the soul?” (John 8:30-31; 2 Corinthians 13:5)

  1. The Occasion of the Sermon (Matthew 5:1)
    • He who will not reap when the fields are ripe for harvest will only have himself to blame if in other seasons he is unable to fill his arms with sheaves.
  2. The Place of the Sermon (Matthew 5:1)
    • It was from a mountain that God proclaimed the Law; it is on a mountain that Jesus expands it.
  3. The Posture of Our Lord (Matthew 5:1)
  4. The Style of His Delivery (Matthew 5:2)
    • “Lord, as You have opened your mouth; open our hearts.”

  1. The Acceptance of the Sermon (Malachi 4:6; Matthew 5:3; Mark 1:15; John 3:17; Acts 1:9)
  2. The Acceptance of Examination
    • The Beatitudes rise, but it would be quite as correct to say that they descend, for from the human point of view they do so.
    • The Seven Beatitudes mark deepening humiliation and growing exaltation.
    • Blessed is the first moment of the Christian life on earth, and Blessed is the last. (John 12:33-34; John 12:35-36; John 8:12, 21, 24; Genesis 6:3)
